Mess Ledger

Splitwise or a mess app: which does a Bangladeshi mess need?

Last updated

Short answer: a mess that cooks together needs a mess app that counts meals, such as Mess Ledger, which is free; Splitwise only splits bills. Splitwise is the app most people think of for splitting shared costs, and for a trip or a flat where nobody cooks together it is a good choice. A mess is a different problem: the biggest cost, food, is not split equally or by a fixed share but by how many meals each person ate. That one difference decides which kind of app fits.

What Splitwise, Tricount and Settle Up do well

They record who paid for what and keep a running total of who owes whom. You can split an expense equally, by exact amounts, by percentage or by shares, and the app suggests the fewest payments to settle up. For rent, wifi and the electricity bill among flatmates, that is all you need.

What a mess needs that a bill splitter does not do

A meal count. In a mess, food is shared by meals eaten: total bazar divided by total meals gives the meal rate, and each member pays their own meals times that rate. A bill splitter has no idea who ate how many meals, so someone has to count them on paper and work out every member's share by hand before entering it. That is the part of the job that causes the arguments.

Meal off and guests. Members switch meals off when they travel and bring guests on weekends. A mess app records these against the member; a bill splitter cannot.

A mess fund. Most messes collect a deposit at the start of the month and pay the bazar out of it. A bill splitter tracks debts between people, not a shared fund with deposits in and bazar out.

Closing the month. Once a month is settled, a mess needs it frozen. In Mess Ledger a closed month cannot be edited by anyone.

Bangla and taka. Splitwise has no Bangla interface. Mess Ledger is Bangla first, with Bengali numerals, and works in taka.

Volume. A mess logs a bazar most days plus meals for every member. Splitwise's free plan limits how many expenses can be added per day, and the paid Pro plan removes the limit.

Which to choose

Use a bill splitter if you share a flat but buy and cook your own food, or for a one-off trip. Use a mess app if the group eats from one kitchen, because the meal rate is then most of the money and the part most likely to be disputed.

You do not need both. Mess Ledger splits rent, electricity, gas, wifi and the cook's salary as well as the food, so the whole month settles in one place.
