What the service is
Mess Ledger records what you and your mess-mates enter and works arithmetic on it. It is a record-keeping tool. It does not hold, move, or settle money, and it is not a bank, a payment service or an accounting firm.
Your account
You are responsible for what happens under your account, so keep your password to yourself. Give us an email address you actually control — it is the only way we can reach you or help you back into a locked-out account.
One person, one account. Do not create accounts for other people without their knowledge.
Your mess and its numbers
The figures shown are worked out from what your mess entered. If somebody records the wrong number, the settlement will faithfully reflect the wrong number. Check the arithmetic before money changes hands; the whole product is built to make that checkable, and every figure is shown with the calculation behind it.
A manager can close a month, which freezes it. A manager can also reopen one. Who holds that role is your mess's business, not ours.
Acceptable use
Do not use Mess Ledger to break the law, to harass anyone, or to store data you have no right to hold. Do not attempt to reach another mess's data, disrupt the service, or probe it for weaknesses without asking us first — if you find a security problem, we would genuinely like to hear about it at the address on the contact page.
Availability
The service is provided as it is. We try to keep it running and we take backups, but we do not promise it will never be unavailable and we do not promise never to lose data. Export anything you cannot afford to lose; the settlement screen produces a CSV for exactly this reason.
Cost and changes
Mess Ledger is free at the time of writing. If a paid tier is introduced, existing messes will be told in advance and nothing about an existing account will change without notice.
We may change these terms. Material changes will be dated and described here.
Ending it
You may stop using the service whenever you like and ask us to delete your account — see the privacy policy for what that removes and what stays in your mess's shared record.
We may suspend an account that is being used to attack the service or harm other people.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses arising from use of the service, including a settlement figure someone disagrees with. This is a tool for showing arithmetic; the decisions and the money remain yours.
